IS 518 Student Government Presidents are chosen.

June has arrived! The end of the school year is here. It has truly been a wonderful, successful year. As we near the end, we have many things planned for our students. I would like to thank everyone for all of their hard work and dedication.

P.140 Student Government raised $84.00 to stop World Hunger.

Senior Dance will be held at IS 518 from 1:00-5:00.
There is a school half day, but seniors can come to the school at 1:00 to attend the dance.

Student Government Begins.
First Meeting was held Feb. 13.

Yes We Can!

We began the New Year with a school wide celebration, of the historical inauguration, of the 44th president, of the United States, Barack Obama. The students participated in an interactive assembly which included a read-aloud from the book Barack, a Barack Obama Trivia Game and a slide show documenting his acceptance of the democratic nomination to Barack Obama winning the presidential election.
Students and staff gathered in the library to witness parts of the inauguration and were asked to share what this day meant to them.

It is hard to believe that we are mid way through the 2008-2009 school year. As we move into this second half of the school year, the administration and staff of P140K would like to thank you for encouraging your child to do his/her best on the New York State ELA Exam. We are very proud of the progress our students have made since the beginning of the school year and look forward to your continued support, reinforcement and encouragement as they prepare for the New York State Math Exam scheduled in March.

Please continue to view our calendar of events for the upcoming months. As a reminder school will be closed Thursday, April 9th, 2009 through Friday, April 17th, 2009 for spring recess.

Children are our Focus

"A school isn’t good enough until it is good enough for our own children. In fact it is not only that it must be good enough for our own children, but it must be the dream school we want for our own children." H. Levin Professor of Economics-Standford

On behalf of the entire P.140K staff, I would like to welcome you to the 2008-2009 school year. We are committed to providing a quality education to your children and we consider the worth and value of each child, and strive to meet his or her individual needs. Our curriculum and instructional practice build skills and thinking strategies that will empower students to be independent and successful throughout their lives.

Just as important as building a strong academic foundation is the formation and strengthening of good citizenship. Students are encouraged to be responsible and be fully engaged in their own learning.

If you have never visited P.140K in person, then it is my hope that through this website you are able to gain an insight to our school and the individuals who make it the strong and dynamic learning community that it is. P.140K is a very special place. We are comprised of a group of individuals who share a common belief. We believe that effective schools are built around relationships and interactions among individuals focused on learning. Our goal is to equip our students with the fundamentals necessary to be successful, while fostering the capability to utilize 21st Century tools to enhance their learning.

Again, welcome to P.140K. We look forward to a challenging and exciting year working with you as partners in you child’s education.

If you can dream it you can make it so.

So much was said and written during the recent presidential campaign about change.

The best thing about change in our own lives is that we can make it happen anytime we like. Any day we wish, we can discipline ourselves to change anything. Any day we wish, we can open the book that will open our mind to new knowledge. Any day we wish, we can start a new activity. Any day we wish, we can start the process of life change. We can do it immediately, or next week, or next month or next year.

As we approach the second marking period, let us all take stock in ourselves to determine what changes we need to make. It is still early in the school year, and there is still plenty of time to improve upon the things we're doing well and to change the things that we are doing not so well. Remember you have the ability to totally transform every area of your life, and it all begins with your very own power of choice.

Best wishes to all of the families of students and staff at P.140K during the up coming holiday season as we continue to work together.

New York Cares comes to P.140K

New York Cares is an organization of volunteers who give up their Saturday’s in October to help make New York City schools a better place. We were fortunate to have New York Cares come to P. 140K on Saturday, October 18th, 2008. They sketched and painted murals in the library, culinary arts room, staff lounge and both sets of entrance doors to our program. The site captain, Ana Levy did a wonderful job organizing each team. Thank you to Jillian and Steve who gave of their time to come in early to sketch each design. And a special thank you to Ms. Edwards, Ms. Korzan, Mr. Rivera, Ms. Tucker and Mr. Berger. Thank you for creating a beautiful learning environment for our students and staff. A great time was had by all.
